An overview of the first 50 years of Road America--one of the top North American permanent road racing circuits (Photos: 83 B& W, 320 color). Racing through the streets of nearby Elkhart Lake had begun in 1950. Clif Tufte quickly anticipated the need for a permanent circuit in the area and it was completed in time for a September 1955 SCCA National. The feature was won by Phil Hill in a Ferrari on the new four-mile track. The circuit hosted top events and club races in the ensuing 50 years and the celebration will continue throughout the 2005 season.
